Happy Earth Day!

In honor of Earth Day, I planted a tree this morning. "Wally", an evergreen (I think) now has a temporary home in my living room between the gigantic tv and next to my Obama action figure. I received him in the mail after getting the dvd "Wall-e" for xmas. I hope he survives. My green thumb is lacking lately. I recently lost most (we're holding out hope for one last branch) of "George" (my jade plant transplant of almost 6 yrs - named after Clooney, of course) to a serious case of overwatering. So sad.

Please follow this link and sign the petition for legislation on a clean energy plan. Go Gore!!

Just 'cuz

I think it's purty.

Broadway Baby

Congrats to the super talented couple Idina Menzel (won Tony award as original Elphaba in Wicked) and Taye Diggs (How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Chicago)-- they're expecting a baby!! The couple met during the original run on Broadway of Rent and have been together for 13 years.

And, one of our own artsy celeb couples just had a baby too. Maia Wilkins and Michael Levine (formerly of Joffrey Ballet) just had a baby boy. He should be doing double tours in about six months.

Sorry Rod

The judge said NO to letting Blago go to Costa Rica to film an upcoming reality show (like we need another one) "I'm a Celebrity -- Get Me Out of Here". Good. He shouldn't be allowed to leave the country, especially to put his mug on tv to make money.

“I don’t think this defendant in all honesty ... fully understands the position he finds himself in,’’ said U.S. District Judge James Zagel in denying the bid.*(Chicago Sun-Times)

And, for the record, I don't think he should be able to use campaign funds to pay for his legal fees. That's not what they were donated for -- but, the alternative may be for us to pay for it via a court appointed atty...

This post by Matt Tiabbi rocks.

Blago Tv

Ugh.

So now he wants to do a reality show? Seriously - just go away. I hope the court decides to not allow him special treatment to leave the country to film this show. I'm sure he's doing it to raise money for his legal bills (and tweek his gigantic ego). I also read that he wants to dip into his campaign funds to pay his legal fees...um, isn't that illegal? What does he care.

Teabagging and Astroturfing

Really. I'm having too much fun with the GPO's latest construct naming faux pas - and how long will it be until someone makes up a lovely lesbian act for the latter?

Ok - I've been reading way too many articles on the Tea Party tax protest (especially when I have an assignment due). I'm going to post a bunch (me lazy)-- read at will (you lazy).

Astroturfing definition.

Piece on Playboy article claiming Rick Santelli's impromtu rant - wasn't.

Daily Kos piece on Santelli, etc.

Talking Points Memo on Freedom Works and how the protests are not organic grassroots movements.

Bribes.

Kos' David Waldmen's coverage of teabagging.

The memo. Better late than never?

Inciting Violence

I've been reading a lot of political articles this week and getting very angry. The crazy shit being preached from the conserative movement really gets me going. I shouldn't be surprised by it, but I am continually shocked at the things they get away with saying and doing. I'm all for freedom of speech; however, isn't there any way to regulate what they seem do be doing on a daily basis - which is inciting violence (and not just in my head).

I'm going to focus on Glenn Beck because he seems to be the loudest crazy of the week (this week). This is his latest tv entertainment rant. Just playing to the crowd. How long do you think it will be until some "disenfranchised" conservative American sets something or someone on fire? This rant from last month, we now find out, may have had an impact on the horrifying police shootings in Pittsburgh. Yes, Richard Poplawski is a right-wing extremist (aka "wingnut") -- and I'm not putting all the blame on Beck and his fearmongering ilk, BUT I do think at the very least the network (shock and awe, it's FOX) has to have some responsibility of what they put on the air, especially considering their audience. Apparently Poplawski posted a Glenn Beck video about FEMA camps on Stormfront, a way rightie site for conspiracy theorists and there gun-toting buds. (Yes, I know the left has the same lunatic fringe and I may adhere to a couple of conspiracy theories myself, but I don't think the way left has the same violence and rage being cultivated in them - could be wrong...)

Obama has never -- that I know of -- taken the stance of taking away everyone's guns. He is in favor of limiting access to AK-47s (Poplawski's fav weapon of choice and the kind he used to kill 3 policement). Who the fuck needs an AK-47 to go hunting?

Whether it be Michelle Bachman wanting her constitutents "armed and dangerous" and likening Americorps programs to concentration camps to reprogram our youth, Cheney claiming Obama is making us "less safe", the GOPers declaring that Obama is cutting our military budget (when in fact it is a 4% increase) or Limbaugh blathering on about...anything, the rhetoric has taken a very scary turn. My only hope is that that corner of the party is slowly, but decisively destroying itself. No good can come of this hate.

Osage, a blogger on Huffpo has a pretty good take on how and why this came about:
In order to gain the political control they've enjoyed over the last ten years, Republican moderates and fiscal conservatives made a pact with the devil (faux Christians, bigots and misanthropes) to achieve the numbers they needed to defeat Democrats. They made a strategic decision to manipulate and exploit the ignorance, fears and hatreds of dysfunctional and vulnerable voters in order to win elections rather than lose them by being intellectually and morally honest.

Today, those who conspired with the devil are caught between wanting to disassociate themselves with and or casting out the devil they empowered and the karmic reality that they don't have the numbers to hold on to or regain power without continuing to accept and "advocate" the immoral values, hypocrisies and corruptions that are dividing and destroying their party.

The survival of today's shrinking Republican Party has become so dependent on extremism that they have no significant power left WITH or WITHOUT the support of America's increasingly pernicious lunatic fringe.

Aren't they cute?

Red Cross to the Rescue

The International Committee of the Red Cross released a "torture" report this week. Aptly titled: The ICRC Report on the Treatment of Fourteen "High Value Detainees" in CIA Custody.

The 41-page report details previously alleged Geneva Convention infractions in clear, quoted detail. Whatever you thought may have happened at Gitmo, etc...it did - and worse.

These are the 12 basic techniques used by the CIA according to the report:
* Suffocation by water poured over a cloth placed over the nose and mouth...
* Prolonged stress standing position, naked, held with the arms extended and chained above the head...
* Beatings by use of a collar held around the detainees' neck and used to forcefully bang the head and body against the wall...
* Beating and kicking, including slapping, punching, kicking to the body and face...
* Confinement in a box to severely restrict movement...
* Prolonged nudity...this enforced nudity lasted for periods ranging from several weeks to several months...
* Sleep deprivation...through use of forced stress positions (standing or sitting), cold water and use of repetitive loud noises or music...
* Exposure to cold temperature...especially via cold cells and interrogation rooms, and...use of cold water poured over the body or...held around the body by means of a plastic sheet to create an immersion bath with just the head out of water.
* Prolonged shackling of hands and/or feet...
* Threats of ill-treatment, to the detainee and/or his family...
* Forced shaving of the head and beard...
* Deprivation/restricted provision of solid food from 3 days to 1 month after arrest...

Let freedom ring! Oh, I'm sorry, ours - not yours. Mark Danner at the New York Book of Reviews likens it to the techniques generated by "Communist China and Soviet Russia". He wrote a well-written, left-leaning (albeit lengthy) article discussing the report and what it means with sections reflecting on the Cheney versus Obama meme of late ("He's making us less safe"; "Am not -- you did."), whether torture-induced evidence can be proven accurate and the best ways to find out the entire truth (and what it means if we decide not to). The full article is here.

One of the most perverse points in all of this is that the majority of prisoners held (and subsequently abused) were never charged with any crime. Here is the mother of all money quotes from Col. Lawrence Wilderson, former Chief of Staff to Sec. of State Col. Colin Powell: "The detainees' innocence was inconsequential".

I'm sure there will be more to come - and none of it good. I hope this non-partisan group report will do something -- ANYTHING -- to jumpstart a serious investigation into who, what, when, where...we know why. If the Obama administration continues to look the other way and let the people responsible keep using executive privilege as their get-out-of-jail-free card, I will be sick with disappointment.

There is no way to move ahead as a country with this tarnish on our souls. Hold every one of them accountable and let the political chips fall at will.

Andrew Sullivan posted a quote from John Sifton, attorney and Executive Director at One World Research (a human rights organization):

Under international law—the Geneva Conventions, the Convention against Torture, and basic precepts of customary international law—the United States has a positive obligation to investigate and prosecute persons alleged to have committed torture and other violations of the laws of war. As of Valentine’s Day 2007, and possibly earlier, the U.S. government was obligated to investigate and prosecute the abuses detailed in the report. The United States’ failure to do so is a recurring breach of international law. (emphasis added.)

Rant

I hate my stupid, mundane, banal, annoyingly inane, pointless fucking job.

Yay Gay!

There seems to be a slow, but steady trend happening in the civil union/gay marriage arena lately. Conn, Mass, Iowa, Vermont and possibly DC (Cali's reversal can't be far behind) are jumping on the gay civil rights band wagon, so to speak. This, of course, has conservative religious groups freaked to the steeples with the National Organization for Marriage(NOM) launching a huge "anti" campaign.

I say let them go live at the fucking Vatican with the homophobe in the funny hat.

Olympic Bid Vid

Sweet.

April is National Poetry Month!

So, here's a poem for you...

Zero Circle

Be helpless, dumbfounded,
Unable to say yes or no.
Then a stretcher will come from grace
To gather us up.

We are too dull-eyed to see that beauty
If we say we can, we're lying.
If we say No, we don't see it,
That No will behead us
And shut tight our window onto spirit.

So let us rather not be sure of anything,
Besides ourselves, and only that, so
Miraculous beings come running to help.
Crazed, lying in a zero circle, mute,
We shall be saying finally,
With tremendous eloquence, Lead us.
When we have totally surrendered to that beauty,
We shall be a mighty kindness.
